HMRC Scam

We have been made aware that there is an HMRC mobile telephone scam currently doing the rounds. The scam is sent in the form of a text message informing the victim that there is a tax refund pending for them. The text then encourages the victim to click on a link to take them to the HMRC website where they can register their contact and banking details for the refund. The website it a fake, designed to look official, but is purely to collect login details and bank details.

Please remember that HRMC would never contact anyone via text message. If a refund is owed you may be notified by letter but the refund will be automatically applied to your account. HMRC would also never ask you to supply your bank details to complete the refund.

Please see the HMRC website for details of this scan and other similar ones that they are aware of: https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/phishing-and-bogus-emails-hm-revenue-and-customs-examples/phishing-emails-and-bogus-contact-hm-revenue-and-customs-examples
