Ensuring our members comply with Data Protection legislation

General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR)

The GDPR will apply in the UK from 25 May 2018. The government has confirmed that the UK’s decision to leave the EU will not affect the commencement of the GDPR.

More information about the GDPR is available on the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) website.

A ’12 Step Guide’ is available from the ICO with a brief overview and guidance to the key areas that the new legislation will cover and what you need to do to ensure that you comply. You can download the guide from the ICO website by clicking this link.

Data Protection Act 1998

The Data Protection Act 1998 came into effect on 1 March 2000. The Act regulates the use of personal data and gives effect in UK law to the European Directive on Data Protection. The Act is concerned with “personal data”, which is information about living, identifiable individuals. This need not be particularly sensitive information and can be as little as a name and address.
