SOSA Dance in the City

SOSA DANCE FITNESS TO PARTNER UP WITH THE MAYOR OF LONDON AND EMD UK TO INSPIRE LONDONERS TO BECOME MORE ACTIVE THROUGH A SHARED LOVE OF DANCE

WE ARE VERY EXCITED TO ANNOUNCE OUR FIRST-EVER ‘SOSA IN THE CITY’ COMMUNITY DANCE CLASS PROJECT. FUNDED BY EMD UK AND THE MAYOR OF LONDON, THIS INNOVATIVE CONCEPT REVOLVES AROUND A ONE-HOUR, FUN-FILLED, FREE SOSA DANCE FITNESS CLASS FOR UP TO 150 PEOPLE – LED BY FOUNDER,  KATY BARROW.

THERE IS ALSO FUNDED ‘FREE’ INSTRUCTOR TRAINING OPPORTUNITIES FOR LONDON-BASED IDTA DANCE TEACHERS, WITH SUCCESSFUL CANDIDATES PERFORMING ON STAGE ON THE DAY WITH KATY AND GOING ON TO LAUNCH THEIR OWN SOSA CLASSES IN THE CAPITAL!

SOSA is a fabulous, fun dance class that is designed to be genuinely fully inclusive – embracing ALL ages and abilities, ALL shapes and sizes, as well as ALL faiths and cultures.

Because it is low impact, SOSA classes are safe and suitable for even absolute beginners to s-t-a-r-t dancing and build up gradually. There is a brief walk-though of the key, authentic steps in advance of dancing every routine, so no-one feels left out of the learning loop and many newcomers find this really empowers them to k-e-e-p dancing!

SOSA may be low impact, but the classes have lots of adaptions to satisfy more experienced dancers, as well as those who love a high energy, total body workout.

Each class is as individual as the qualified SOSA Instructor who teaches it, with no less than 35 international dance styles they can put on their playlist – from American Smooth, Brazilian Zouk, Bachata, Charleston, Kizomba and Jive to Paso Doblé, Reggaeton, Rumba, Salsa, Samba and Viennese Waltz!

Right from the start, Katy’s aim has been for SOSA to encourage everybody to get up and dance, having fun in a friendly, local group – and to bring that same sense of belonging applies to the ever-growing number of qualified SOSA instructors all around the UK, now affectionately known as the ‘SOSA family’.

It is this desire for inclusivity at every level that led Katy to seek funding for the creation of a FREE-FOR-ALL community event that would coincide with people’s New Year resolve to become more active. Her vision, through the addition of funded instructor training, is to ensure that this amazing, one-off ‘SOSA In The City’ dance class will have a lasting legacy, increasing the likelihood of participants remaining active by training new dance teachers to run SOSA classes all over London.

“We could not have even dreamed of staging ‘SOSA In The City’ without the empowering support of The Mayor of London and the EMD UK/Sport England Open Bursary,” confirms Katy Barrow, “and I am so excited about its potential. I have just had the privilege of training some fabulous new instructors as part of this project, but there are still 5 FREE places for our Online Training Course for qualified IDTA dance teachers which can easily be completed over a weekend – or even during the class-free time over the Christmas break.”

This first-ever ‘SOSA In The City’ dance class takes place on 14th January 2018, at the iconic YORK HALL in BETHNAL GREEN, E2 9PJ. The class itself will start at 11:00am, with access for participants from 10:30am. This is destined to be a real SOSA spectacular – and not just in the size of class – and Katy has developed a real crowd-pleasing, fun SOSA Playlist and dance mix!
