IDTA Freestyle Scholarships 2018

Doors open for registration from 8.15am
Scholarships start 9.00am

Candidates for the IDTA Freestyle Scholarships are initially nominated by the Association’s Examiners
when taking a Freestyle Solo medal test at Star 1 level or above, through a qualified teacher.
Candidates must obtain a mark of at least 90% and show outstanding / exceptional potential.

Awards are granted in the following age groups for Freestyle Solo performances:
Class A – under 14 ie: up to and including 13 years of age
Class B – under 16 ie: 14 – 15 years of age
Class C – under 18 ie: 16 – 17 years of age
Class D – 18 and over ie: 18 years and over

The Scholarships will be held annually in the Spring. Nominations are taken from 1 March to 28/29
February the following year.

Winners will receive a trophy and a cheque prize to further their dance career.

Certificates are awarded to every nominee.

An additional trophy and voucher towards further training to be presented by Anna Jones for the
nominees in each age group showing outstanding potential

 

Format of Scholarships

All nominees will participate in a class (Class A, Class B, Class C or Class D depending on age)
after a warm up.

Approximately 12 semi finalists from each age group will be selected to give a solo performance,
followed by a repeat solo performance by approximately 6 finalists.

Solo performances will be in age groups and will be 20 seconds in length, 40 seconds in Slow
Dance, choreographed by teacher. (Must be based on Freestyle rather than Street Based.)

Judges will select the winner from each age group.

Solo spots for Class A – music set by Faculty – 20 secs – Freestyle
Solo spots for Class B – 20 secs – Freestyle
Solo spot for Class C – 20 secs – Freestyle
Solo spot for Class D – 40 secs – Freestyle Slow

1. Dress:

Clothing should be plain throughout the day.
No patterned fabrics
Leotards / catsuits should be worn and dance trousers and tops for boys
Colour is of the choice of the candidate
No rhinestones or added decorations
No face or body make up for under 12’s
Over 12’s may use light makeup
No false eyelashes or fake tan or jewellery for any age group
Footwear for all age groups is optional
No ornate head gear

2. Music:

For the class, music will be provided by the class instructor.

For the solo performance:
Music for Class A will be provided by the Freestyle Faculty, approximate tempo 160 beats per minute
(between 155-165 bpm)

Music for Class B and C to be selected by the nominee, in any format (CD, iPod etc), clearly marked
with name and track, plus a back up copy. Approximate tempo 160 beats per minute
(between 155-165 bpm)

Music for Class D to be selected by the nominee, in any format (CD, iPod etc), clearly marked with
name and track, plus a back up copy. Slow tempo music is required.

3. Age Groups:

Class A – under 14 ie: up to and including 13 years of age
Class B – under 16 ie: 14 – 15 years of age inclusive
Class C – under 18 ie: 16 – 17 years of age inclusive
Class D – 18 and over ie: 18 years and over

The nominee’s age on the date of the finals will determine the class / age group they participate in. It is essential that the nominee’s date of birth is provided by their teacher when acknowledging the nomination to Head Office.

4. Registration:

All nominees are required to register 45 minutes prior to the commencement of their class. Failure to do
so may result in them being unable to take part.

5. Re-dances will not be allowed except in the case of music failure or at the discretion of the MC.

6. In the event of a nominated candidate being unable to take part, entry may not be deferred to the
following year.

7. In the event of a nominated candidate changing schools, written permission to take part must be supplied by both school principals.

8. In accordance with Child Protection Guidance video cameras, cameras and mobile phone cameras
may not be used. A professional photographer will be in attendance. Any objections to the
photographing of the scholarships should be submitted in writing to IDTA one month before the event.

9. Entry fees:

For nominees and spectators £12 in advance and £15 on the door if available.

10. Exclusions:

Rotating no-handed movements are not allowed. Chest rolls are not allowed.

11. Professional qualifications:

Nominees who take any professional teaching qualification in any genre including pre-associates and
modules may not take part in the scholarships.
